Lake Lyndon B. Johnson

Lake Lyndon B. Johnson

In a state where some reservoirs can experience water drops of six feet and more, Lake LBJ is a "constant level" lake. This fact adds immeasurably to its desirability for waterfront living. The lake is a great place for a primary residence or a vacation home. It is centrally located 50 miles from Austin and 90 miles from San Antonio. The lake provides water used for cooling purposes at the Ferguson Power Plant in Kingsland.

Lake LBJ homes for sale in the Texas hill country combine a recreation-filled lifestyle with proximity to the state capital of Austin. Growth in the area means that many newer, all-brick Lake LBJ TX homes are on the market. Lake LBJ real estate includes wonderful waterfront properties in communities like Horseshoe Bay, Beaver Island, Applehead Island, Kingsland, Granite Shoals, Deer Haven, Blue Lake, Highland Haven, Twin Isles, Sandy Harbor, Shady Acres, Oak Ridge, and Marble Falls. At the same time, much more modest-priced Lake LBJ homes are available to water lovers with a more limited budget. Open lots are also available for those wanting to build their custom dream homes.

History

Originally, the reservoir was called Lake Granite Shoals. It was formed in 1950 through the construction of the Granite Shoals Dam across the Colorado River. President Lyndon Baines Johnson had a ranch on the lake, so it was natural to name the lake after the president in 1965. "LBJ" hosted a number of dignitaries at this waterfront property when he was both Vice-President and then President.

Parks and Recreation

Of course, most recreational activities are water-based in some way. In addition to boating, water skiing, and jet skiing, the lake is popular for windsurfing and wake boarding as well.

Residents of the gated and/or planned communities found along the 12-mile long lake enjoy clubhouse amenities, pools, and championship golf in some instances. Many of these communities have their own boat slips and marinas.

Attractions and Events

Wine-tasting cruises ply the waters of Lake LBJ. In fact, the lake is along the Texas Wine Trail. Marinas cater to every need, including pontoon boat rentals, kayak rentals, boat detailing, and dry storage. There's a great selection of professional fishing guides for those that want to learn about the fishing hot spots found all over the lake. Crappie and white bass fishing can be spectacular. Big largemouth bass are regularly pulled from these prolific fishing waters.

Aqua Boom is an annual festival now in its 44th year. Kingsland hosts this July 4th event that includes a water parade, a kids' parade, and the Malibu Boats ski show. Unique and quirky races include the "Wacky Raft" race and the "Rubber Duckie" race. Live music precedes the fireworks reflected in the languid waters of Lake LBJ.
